How to get to Liverpool


Air Travel

Manchester International Airport (MAN) is 45 minutes by motorway from Liverpool.

Duration of flights to Manchester International Airport from:

  • Dusseldorf 80 minutes
  • Hong Kong 13 hours
  • Madrid 2.5 hours
  • New York 7.5 hours

Regular trains (2 an hour) leave Manchester Airport for Liverpool Lime St Station. There are direct trains with a journey time of about 1 hour, or trains with one change with a journey time of 1 1/2 hours. Check train time tables on the National Rail website.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) also provides a variety of international flights.

There is regular bus service from Liverpool Airport into Liverpool city centre. The Arriva Service 80A runs to the Liverpool One Bus Station, as does the Arriva Service 86A, and the Arriva Airlink 500 also runs to Liverpool One and to Lime St Station.

Car Travel

From the M62, at the end of the motorway, continue straight ahead onto Edge Lane (A5080, then A5047) and look for signs for Liverpool City Centre and the University.

Coach Travel

National Express provides coach service between Liverpool and many destinations in the United Kingdom. The National Express terminal in Liverpool is loctaed on Norton St, approximately ten minutes by foot from the University. From the exit, turn right and cross London Road into Seymour Street and Russell Street. Then turn left into Brownlow Hill and head towards the Metropolitan Catholic Cathedral.

Rail Travel

Liverpool Lime St Station is well-served by the British Rail network with connections to London and all other major British cities. Check the National Rail website for ticket information and booking.

  • Edinburgh 3.5-4.5 hours (depending upon changes)
  • Glasgow 3.5-4 hours

  • Southampton 4.5 hours

By foot, it is a 10-15 minute journey from Lime St Station to the University. Take the main exit and turn left into Lime Street. Then turn left again at the Britannia Adelphi Hotel and continue up Brownlow Hill towards the Metropolitan Catholic Cathedral and the Victoria Gallery & Museum (the red brick building with the clock tower). A taxi service is available from the station at the Skelhorne St exit.

The Eurostar rail service operates between London (St Pancras), Paris, and Brussels, with further (non-Eurostar) connections to many major European cities.

Sea Travel

Liverpool is linked to Dublin via ferry service and Birkenhead (across the Mersey River from Liverpool) is linked to Belfast.
